BENEFITING: American Cancer Society
Tom Mercier is the previous Logistic’s Chairperson for the NECT Relay For Life. He was a team member on the Crabtree & Evelyn Relay For Life team. Tom had also been involved in many other charities, such as, the logistic’s Chairperson for Bark in the Park, he was a bicyclist for Camp Quinnebaug’s annual bike ride (where Tom biked over 60 miles both years that he did the ride). Tom helped the Lowes Hero’s build the ramp for the ARC in Danielson. He also helped build a ramp for the Mortlake Fire Department. Tom liked to pay it forward….
On February 9, 2013 Tom was involved in a horrible accident! While he was snow blowing his driveway a snow plow truck entered the driveway Tom was snow blowing and proceeded to run him over, snow blower and all. The truck, weighing roughly 15 times more than the average car, had come to a stop on Tom’s left arm. The truck was a single-axle plow truck (it has one set of wheels in the back) and can weigh up to 50,000 pounds when loaded… Tom was a left handed finish carpenter with a gift to create the most beautiful woodwork. This accident has destroyed the carpenter Tom was, his work will NEVER continue. He will NEVER be able to ride a bicycle like he used to… He will NEVER button a shirt or put on his shoes or pants the same ever again. He cannot even pick up his beautiful granddaughter like you or I can… Tom is committed to his cross-country bike ride across the country. This ride is really to honor the memory of his mother Joyce Mercier who passed away from ovarian cancer. Tom is continuing the fight in her honor. We have also made a commitment to support Tom in any way we can. We had fund-raiser after fund-raiser to provide Tom with a bike he could maneuver even through his limitations. The time has come now for him to set off for his cross country tour. The proceeds raised from his ride across America will be donated to the American Cancer Society so no one else has to lose their mother. We hope everyone out there will be willing to reach into their hearts and donate to this cause. Help Tom reach his goal, not only financially but to physically ride across the states. He leaves from Misquamicut Beach, RI in May hoping to reach California. We wish him all the success as he embarks on this grand adventure.
