The success of GOALS' initial educational endeavor, funded in large part by donations here on crowdrise, allowed to successfully apply for a grant for the 2012-2013 school year. That $12,250 grant has allowed us to continue all of our previous educational programs . See below for specific details on the Dream Team.
This holiday season we are looking to the extended GOALS family to help expand the effectiveness of our education program. While the program has been an overall success, our efforts for continual improvement have identified a couple of areas of immediate need.
Our Winter '12 campaign is aimed at raising funds to launch a range of programs on January 1, 2013 that we believe will have an immediate and lasting effect on the efficacy of our work here in Haiti.
Our in-house analysis of our programs by staff, participants, and their families have pointed to these immediate needs: (costs for each program included in parenthesis.)
- solar light system to allow our rural students to study after dark ($3,000)
- an expanded transport program which will allow our rural students to
A. Spend less time traveling and more time studying
B. allow all students to attend 100% of their classes regardless of shifts in family finances ($10,000)
-hire a fulltime educator to: ($11,000)
A. Ensure 100% success on state exams for all Dream Team members
B. Achieve 100% basic literacy among ALL GOALS participants by year end 2013
We hope that you will join with us this holiday season in providing vital support to a community fully invested in realizing a better future.
Just think! A donation of:
$50 ensures 1 Dream Team member full transport for a year
$100 offers classroom materials (notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons) for a month
$250 provides black board, chalk, and maps for a month
$300 grants one solar power set up for a community
$500 pays a teacher’s salary
$1000 sets up an entire classroom
The overwhelming support of our educational initiative, the Dream Team, allowed us to expand our dream team size from 10 to 28 students. Our holistic scholarship program provides funds for a variety of school related costs including:
-school fees ( there is no public education system in the same vein as
that provided in the United States. Even "public schools" have term
fees that make schooling beyond the primary school level nearly
impossible for the vast majority of the GOALS population)
-partial transport (The majority of our students our from rural
locales make travel to school one of the primary barriers. While we do
provide some assistance to our most needy students, we do hope to
expand this program as outlined later in this letter)
-books and supplies (the scholarship pays for students’ books and supplies
for an entire year)
-group trainings (supplementary training for our Dream Team members in
everything from leadership and public health to civic engagement and
hands-on chemistry experiments)
