THE STORY:

I entered the teaching profession believing I would help cultivate students that value diversity, exhibit compassion, and possess the disposition and skills to tackle real-world issues.  Instead, year after year, I found myself succumbing to the pressure to "teach to the test".  I love teaching topics such as the French Revolution and the Cold War, however, I believe educating for global competence is critical to maintaining a sustainable and peaceful world.  The current state of the world is precarious.  There are various issues that have a 'global' character, in that they affect, all parts of the world and so all people on the planet.  Last year I proposed offering Global Politics at my school.  The aim of the course is to develop international mindedness.  I believe the course will help cultivate inquisitive and knowledgeable students who are empowered to take action.

I am thrilled to be teaching Global Politics this year.  A major component of the course is the engagement activity.  The engagement activity provides students with the opportunity to go outside the classroom, construct their own knowledge on a political issue of their choosing, and take action.  It would be hypocritical of me to expect my students to contribute to the global community in a meaningful way if I did not set an example.

Travelling to Turkey last summer with my brother was a transformative experience for me.  When we were in a cab stopped at a light, a young Syrian girl walked up to the driver's window and tried to sell a bottle of water.  The driver did not buy a bottle but gave the girl Turkish Lira.  The young girl's plight and the driver's empathy tugged at my heartstrings.  Not long after we returned home, the photograph of three-year-old Aylan Kurdi's body, lying lifeless, on a beach we had visited was published by the media.  My students and I will be studying the Syrian Civil War and the subsequent refugee crisis in-depth.  I will be using GOAL as a case study to teach about the function and impact of international organizations.  GOAL has been a leading humanitarian actor in Syria since 2012.  GOAL focuses on delivering food and non-food items, repairing houses, rehabilitating water networks to provide safe water, and supporting livelihoods.  The relationship that I have established with GOAL will enrich instruction.  The Development Director of GOAL will be visiting Commack High School to engage in a dialogue with my students about NGOs and GOAL in particular.

By committing to the New York City Marathon on November 6th on behalf of Team GOAL USA, I hope to raise funds that will go towards alleviating the suffering of others and implementing development-oriented programs.

XOXO Keira
