EVENT DATE: May 07, 2017
GoBabyGo! is a global, grassroots initiative that provides free mobility aides to children with significant disabilities. At our GoBabyGo! Workshop, high school robotics teams from across Maryland and DC will modify 7 (or more!) toy ride-on cars and give them to families of disabled toddlers, enabling those kids to move and explore independently -- just like other kids. Not only is one of these cars a therapeutic mobility aide, but it's also the coolest toy ever.
More than 500,000 American children under the age of five have mobility problems that can cause significant cognitive and motor delays -- delays that may not be reversible. Powered wheelchairs for such young children can cost $30,000 and usually aren’t available until the children are older.
GoBabyGo! cars are a simple and elegant solution to this problem; they're cheap to build -- only $200 per car -- and free to the families who receive them. The mobility that these cars provide is a proven method of improving critical cognitive and motor skills, not to mention social skills. And they're perfect for trouble-making...
