BENEFITING: American Cancer Society
EVENT DATE: Mar 10, 2017
Welcome to the "God Shave the King II" cancer fundraiser. The History and Politics (HaP) Club at Georgia State University-Perimeter College (Clarkston campus) is collecting donations for cancer research, with all proceeds-- that is, ALL of the money-- going to the American Cancer Society.
Our very first fundraiser took place just over 10 years ago, in Fall of 2006. Back then, I just thought that it would be a “hoot” to encourage folks to “humiliate” me by buzzing my hair to a “1” setting (that’s almost shaved), and also actually shaving my beard off. I did not know anyone with cancer, but I did know that it was a terrible thing. Over ten years later, I know family members and close friends, and colleagues who have had cancer (two of whom did not make it). So, this time, while I think the novelty of cutting my hair is still present. I now think that it represents a very small sacrifice to remind me, and us, that many cancer patients lose a lot, not just hair, going through their recovery.
For this version of “God Shave the King” (get it?!?—my last name is King!), I am not looking forward to the loss of hair. It has gotten longer, and apparently a number of people (including me, at times) like the longer look. I am going through with it, since it is for a great cause—cancer research-- and for a great organization-- the American Cancer Society (ACS).
It will all happen on March 1--this Wednesday!-- around 3:30. We plan on broadcasting it via Facebook Live, so it should be fun.
Remember, in this fight, no one should fight alone, so I am asking you to join in the fight by donating what you can. The web site to donate directly is included below, in case you need it to send ot others. Please donate what you can so we can join in fighting cancer together! Thanks!
