Goedgedacht is a very beautiful old Cape Dutch farm situated on the slopes of the Kasteelberg, just 87km north west of Cape Town. The farm was one of the first allocated to the “Free Burgers” in 1704 and is steeped in the history of the old Cape Colony. However, times have changed and Goedgedacht farm is now a busy community development centre where a determined effort is being made to make a real contribution to the most critical problems facing all of us... poverty and climate change.
At a local level the Trust’s “Path out of Poverty Programme” (POP) is working very successfully to help poor rural children find ways out of the desperate cycles of poverty which have trapped farm worker families for many generations.
By making every effort to keep children in school we have slashed school drop out rates - of the 297 children in our programme, only 15 have so far dropped out of school. By the end of last year we had eight children who had reached matric, five in agricultural learnerships and one of our young achievers admitted to a degree programme in agriculture at Elsenburg.
Lives of rural children are being transformed. Children are now able to dream of a future, one in which they can make a difference.
