THE STORY:

When I lived in Mexico, they didn’t have a blood center like Coffee Memorial. Many people living there lose their lives because there isn’t a good blood supply. So when I moved here in 2001, I started donating blood. I had never had a blood transfusion nor had I known anyone that required one. That all changed on May 18, 2013 when my oldest daughter, Carla Contreras, was diagnosed with leukemia. A few weeks after her first chemotherapy session, she felt tired and didn’t feel like talking or moving. My husband and I ended up carrying our daughter to the hospital like a baby because she was too weak to walk. She couldn’t even open her eyes on the trip to the hospital. I was afraid I was losing her. When we got to the hospital, the doctor told us she needed a blood transfusion of at least 2 units. The blood transfusion was like magic. As soon as she started receiving the blood, she was talking, laughing and being our silly daughter again. It was then that we all realized how important blood was for patients like Carla. Carla told everyone in our family she wanted them to go and donate blood because the blood transfusion had made her feel so much better and she wanted to help other people feel better too. This is how Carla’s mission began. She started asking me to take her to Coffee Memorial Blood Center every time someone we knew was going to donate blood so that she could hold their hand and encourage them. It was on one of these visits that we met Suzanne Talley, Coffee’s Director of Marketing and Public Relations. Suzanne saw Carla walking around the blood center and wanted to meet her and hear her story. Later, Suzanne asked Carla to make a TV commercial. That request made Carla feel so honored and special that she decided to ask our church to sponsor a blood drive. Carla became passionate about blood donation and soon she was all over TV and the newspaper asking for donations and supporting blood drives with her new best friend, Suzanne. She memorized the names of the employees at Coffee Memorial and even called the receptionist “Grandma.” As I watched her put her energy into helping people, I had no doubt in my mind that my baby was going to beat cancer. Carla even asked her oncology nurse to participate in Coffee Memorial’s Over the Edge fundraiser. Carla helped raise money for a new bloodmobile by selling bracelets and pictures at the Boots vs. Badges softball game. Her passion for life and her desire to help others gave her a reason to fight cancer. During the 9 months she battled her disease, she received a lot of blood transfusions. Sadly, on February 15, 2014, Carla lost her battle but earned her wings. Her last thoughts were about helping others. She even asked her nurses to take the blood she was supposed to receive and use it to help other kids that needed it more. Coffee Memorial, Suzanne Talley and the other blood center employees were so special to our daughter, Carla. We want to thank them and all the blood donors from the bottom of our hearts for giving our daughter the gift of life – in her case, quality of life. Carla still lives on through our family and friends that continue to donate blood in her memory to help others. God bless you! Lucia Perez
