EVENT DATE Sep 13, 2014
I am trying to raise funds and bring awareness towards the Laura Wooldridge Memorial Fund already in place on GiveForward.com (http://gfwd.at/1rt0M6w). It is $7,000 away from reaching the $15,000 goal and the fundraiser ends on September 7th, 2014! That means I have 27 days from now to help get that goal achieved!
For your donations, I will be running in the Winslow, AR half marathon on September 13. Have I ever participated in a running race before? Yes. Done a half marathon before? Yes. So what's the deal? Well, this time, I'm going to do the race in a squirrel costume. Why a squirrel costume? Well, the website for the race said, "Come and run with the squirrels!" Also, historical records show that the average temperature in Winslow in mid September is around 84 degrees. Now, I can sweat just from brushing my teeth, so doing this race...in costume...in 80 degree weather might make me go nutty, but it's for a very worthy cause. I have registered for the race and the squirrel costume is being shipped. It's on now!
What is the Laura Wooldridge Memorial Fund? It is a fund in place to honor an amazing, kind, passionate, and inspiring woman who was sadly taken from us too soon. See, Laura Wooldridge was
was an avid mountain biker. While pre-riding the cross country course at the Eureka Springs Fat Tire Festival, Laura fell. Those that ride know that crashes are part of the sport, and most of the time, we walk away with a few scrapes and bruises. But on July 19, 2014, Laura suffered injuries requiring transport by Med-Evac helicopter to the nearest hospital. Sadly, she succumbed to those injuries and passed away prior to her arrival at the hospital. This fund was set up to honor her and her love for mountain biking and our cycling community around Little Rock, AR. It is assisting her family with immediate needs, such as funeral/memorial expenses. Her memorial is being planned and will be located at the main trail entrance to the Pfeifer Loop near the Big Dam Bridge in North Little Rock. The Pfeifer Loop trail will be dedicated to her at a ceremony upon completion of the memorial.
All the money I raise will go to the memorial fund. The world lost a beautiful human being on July 19. I didn't know Laura for very long, but in the short time I did, I found her to be genuinely kind, inspiring, and someone you just enjoyed being around. This fund will help her legacy live on. I believe she'll be cheering for me from above during the race. She might have thought that this is all silly, but nonetheless, she would have been supportive, because that's what friends do. I will strive to Live Like Laura.
