iMentor matches high school students with college-educated mentors to guide them to college graduation. We strive to build relationships that empower first-generation students from low-income communities to graduate high school, succeed in college and achieve their dreams.
Education is very important to me. As many of you may know, I spend two years teaching at an elementary school in rural China after graduating college, motivating my students to develop academic curiosity – and ultimately to stay in school. Upon moving to New York, I wanted to stay involved. That’s why I joined iMentor. I’m currently a mentor to an 11th grader named Huishan at International High School of Lafayette. She moved to the US last year from China, by herself, for the opportunity to attend a US university. As we begin to talk about colleges, it’s very clear that she has big dreams to study computer science at NYU. The path ahead is tough, but I am so grateful I get to navigate this journey with her.
iMentor works, just ask any mentor or mentee, but we need your help. Please help me in showing our students that there are countless people who care for them, who support them and will help them achieve their dreams.
Here is what your support can do for New York City’s students:
$25 allows a mentee to attend a year of iMentor events
$100 supplies a mentee with a year's access to monthly career and college preparation events
$500 provides a college application event for an entire junior class
$1,000 supports the mentorship of one student as they work one-on-one with their mentor toward academic and personal success
