BENEFITING: GOLF FIGHTS CANCER
ORGANIZER: GOLF FIGHTS CANCER
EVENT: 2016 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 18, 2016
I am truly honored and proud to be a member of the Golf Fights Cancer 2016 Boston Marathon Team. Over the last ten+ years I have been a supporter of Golf Fights Cancer but have decided to take a big step (or many, many, many steps in my 26.2 mile journey) to personally give back and support Golf Fights Cancer this year in a different way.
I will log many miles over the next five+ months of training and during my journey from Hopkinton to Boston on April 18, 2016 in support of the fight against cancer. Like everyone, I have had a personal connection to cancer and this journey will be in honor and memory of all of our family and friends that have battled this awful disease. I will run in honor of my father, who battled (and won) against prostate cancer, in memory Grandma Mugherini, who battled lung cancer, in honor of Jack Ford and several close friends, who battled and continue to battle against melanoma, in honor of Amy Gardner and in honor and in memory of the countless number of other friends and patients of my sister, Dr. Therese Hughes, who battled and continue to battle against breast cancer, and in honor of all of the other family and friends who I neglected to mention but who fought and continue to fight so hard against the many different forms of cancer. Each step that I take will be in your honor and memory. While it will be a tough journey up to and on Marathon Monday, it will never be as tough as the journey that those friends and family have taken in the fight against cancer and I will always remember that along the way!
Golf Fights Cancer means so much to me. Golf Fights Cancer was founded in 2004 by my brother-in-law, Brian Oates, and his great friend, Jay Monahan. Since its inception, it has raised $4 Million and given 40 grants to 24 different organizations, helping to fund initiatives such as summer camps, chemo pumps, research, hospital playrooms, air travel to/from treatments and so much more. Golf Fights Cancer has had such a huge impact in the fight against cancer and I hope that my participation as member Golf Fights Cancer 2016 Boston Marathon Team helps, in even the smallest way, them to continue to make an impact!
Historically, TeamGFC’s Boston Marathon runners rank in the Top 5 amongst charitable teams for average dollars raised per bib and I truly hope that I won't let them down this year! Thank you for your support of me, my journey and most importantly, Golf Fights Cancer. Donations of any size are welcome and are appreciated equally.
GOLF FIGHTS CANCER -
Golf Fights Cancer was founded because we had a personal connection to cancer. Just like you.
Golf Fights Cancer’s first steps were taken at the Boston Marathon, and as such, this event holds a special place of distinction in organizational lore. Seldom fast, but always determined to finish and committed to fundraising, GFC marathoners run to do their small part in the fight against cancer.
We owe special gratitude to Boston Marathon Sponsor, John Hancock, for graciously including Golf Fights Cancer as part of their Non-Profit Marathon program. We are truly grateful to be one of the beneficiaries their commitment to giving back through the marathon.
Thanks for choosing to get involved and for helping us to make a difference in the fight against cancer.
