The fund raiser that I am creating is for a program entitled 'Good Neighbors'. It will work to fundeducational activities and snacks for the 'Park at Humble'- Good Neighbor Program. We create monthly calendars full of activities for this tax-credit/low-income apartment community. I battle so often with the funding of this project. I have tons of amazing educational as well as fun ideas with no money to make things happen. I plan and facilitate activities on the property, for seniors, children, teens, and adults. Some days it is tutoring that I focus on. I love doing art lessons as well as crafts with the little ones. Other times I do science projects with the children and teens. The seniors enjoy my chair aerobic classes and of course the spa days when I give them mini-manicures or polish changes. I try to reach out to all the different needs in this community, with a focus on knowledge. It can be academic help, or financial literacy, even something as simple as educating our youth on how to attain employment, college scholarships, as well as getting them involved in community service. For the adults I do GED prep, computer literacy, and help with job search as well. There are so many things I would like to cover, but funds are limited. I have a few people that have volunteered time and snacks, but there is always a need for more. There is just always a need, period. On the other hand, somedays it is just about offering a good, healthy snack or meal. I always try and have something to eat at the different activities. It is reality, and a harsh reality that some of the children only eat at school. It is a harsh reality that some seniors are living on a fixed income and may not be eating as frequently as they should. The Good Neighbor Program is just trying to fill in some of the gaps. There is always a need.
