THE STORY:

Goodwill Industries of Mid-Michigan, Inc. wrote -

The mission of the Goodwill GoodGuides® youth mentoring program is to empower youth who are at risk for delinquency to make positive life choices that enable them to maximize their personal, current and future potential.

The Goodwill Industries of Mid-Michigan, Inc. GoodGuides®  youth mentoring program envisions a community in which every youth experiences nurturing and positive relationships and community support that enable them to develop to their full potential, with the capability of making informed, responsible decisions as involved members of their communities.

Most of us don’t need to look far to see the poverty and violence that has enveloped our hometown city of Flint. The nightly news and internet are filled with stories and statistics.  The harsh reality is that too often young people living in Flint do not see a path of employment for themselves either and when they are not aware of an array of available future career choices, they are much less likely to invest their energies in school.  They are much more likely to adopt risky or delinquent behaviors and ultimately experience chronic unemployment.

Conversely, young people who are engaged with positive role models and equipped to navigate careers are more likely to see school as relevant, complete high school and post-secondary credentials, and transition to employment that launches careers.  When young people are shown how to succeed, it’s much more likely that they will succeed.

Through the GoodGuides® youth mentoring program, Goodwill Industries of Mid-Michigan, Inc., shows students in Flint, MI how to succeed.   GoodGuides®, which serves youth between the ages of 12 and 17, helps students build career plans and skills and prepare for school completion, post-secondary training and productive work.  By pairing teens with mentors who commit at least one year to engaging youth in promoting their career development and life skills through a supportive ear and guidance, the program helps young people see a path forward.
