BENEFITING: MINDS MATTER
The Marathon was never on my bucket list; neither was mentoring or curing cancer. Yet somehow, all of these things have become near and dear to my heart.
In 2012, I ran my first half marathon, training alone. In 2013, I thought, let's run a few more. So I did. I ran a second half marathon, and raised $900 for Minds Matter. I raised $6,245 for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society as part of my "Bi-Coastal Challenge," 2 Half-Marathons on 2 Coasts in a one month time period. And this year, after doing all of that, I thought, why not: let's run a freaking full marathon. In June 2014, I completed marathon #1, the Seattle Rock & Roll Marathon, and helped my team raise over $92,000 towards curing cancer.
You'd think I was done, but I'm not. And that's why you're here. In 2015, I have a quest: Two more marathons, Two amazing causes. $5,000 (or more) for them both! One of them is Team in Training and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I'm running the LA Marathon in 2015 to raise $2,500 towards the the eradication of blood cancers forever. My second cause is one of education. I (also) volunteer for a group called Minds Matter of LA, and I believe that education is the best tool to level the playing field for those living at or below the poverty level. I have had the privelege of mentoring a bright young woman named Genesis, and watched her blossom from shy sophomore into confident senior. And I'm planning to run a second marathon in October (hopefully, in Germany, Austria and Switzerland!) at the end of 2015 for her, and all her present and future classmates in Minds Matter.
Thanks for being here. My journey starts now, in September 2014. Stick around for updates here and on my website, Ratana.net, as I chronicle this latest chapter in running for a cure. And thank you in advance for your kindness, your support and your generosity.
