EVENT DATE: May 25, 2012
Dear friends and family,
As many of you know, this summer I am traveling to South Africa with Fordham's Global Outreach ("GO!") program. GO! is a community service and cultural immersion program that sends Fordham students to learn about social justice and participate in community improvement projects.
Our project is based in the Jesuit tradition of service. As such, GO! teams learn to be active members of our global community. We engage with some of the most difficult and contentious issues facing mankind. My team, including 11 other Fordham Students, will to travel to Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa. We will meet with community organizations and human rights activists to learn more about the social justice issues facing South Africans; including: race, socio-economic inequality, human rights and HIV/AIDS.
Every GO! project is grounded in four pillars: community, spirituality, simple living and social justice. We are guided by a principle of learning from our host communities. I look forward to the values I will develop and life-lessons I will learn on this trip.
I am sending you this link to ask for any kind of donations you are able to provide. Monetary donations will help me pay for plane tickets and travel expenses as well as team donations to some of the non-profits we visit. Recognizing the financial difficulties facing our own country, our team is also looking for physical donations for the organizations that we are planning to visit. School supplies (pencils, pens, paper, crayons, markers etc), and blankets are especially useful. Donations need not be new -- everything is very much appreciated. This project will be one of the biggest experiences of my life, and any help I receive along the way will be very much appreciated.
