As a kid, I wasn't particularly active.
As a teenager, I was even worse.
As an adult I was the definition of sedentary.
That attitude & lifestyle led me to tipping the scales at 286 pounds at the age of 26. Stepping on the scale around Christmas of 2010 to see that number was a BIG wakeup call. I was miserable, through & through. A little over a year ago I set out to change my ways & change to a healthy & active lifestyle.
And that I did! In the last year I've dropped nearly 80 pounds, finished my first 5k, did Warrior Dash & just registered to do my first half-marathon. (I'm crazy, right?)
But I'm not just doing this race for me. I'm doing it for kids who were like me. Kids who would rather sit in front of the TV & eat junk food rather than go outside & play. Kids who eat Happy Meals more often than fresh fruits & veggies. I'm not knocking on my parents at all here, but I had no concept of nutrition as a child. I didn't realize that exercise was important, I just though my PE teacher was a jerk.
If I had an ounce of the knowlede & of the desire to be active when I was a kid as I do now, my whole life could have been different.
Maybe I wouldn't have been the fat girl in elementary school who got called Thunder Thighs on a nearly daily basis.
Maybe I wouldn't have gotten mocked & laughed at when I had a crush on a boy (who obviously wasn't going to like me back).
Maybe I could have inspired others around me then to be healthier & active, too.
Maybe my Mom wouldn't have Type II Diabetes, among a slew of other health issues & maybe my little brother wouldn't be tipping the scales at what I'm estimating is around 300 pounds.
I'm thankful for the life I have now, but my mind can't help but wander to think what if? No one should have to go through what I endured as a kid & with bullying such a big issue now, I cant help but think that it may be 100x worse than it was then.
Help me help these kids get off on the right foot!
