THE STORY:

Hi, and thanks for coming to my page! My name is Kevin Collier, I'm 41 years old, and am on my quest to finish my 3rd half marathon!  Why should you support me? Well read on!

I began running a little over 4 years ago partly as a joke. I was overweight, out of shape, and realized that I needed to do something or else I was only going to get worse. What better way than to run a 5k? How funny! To watch this fat guy run!  So I started training. And my first race was the Go! St. Louis 5k. As I crossed the finish line, I was crying(my profile picture is from that race). I couldn't believe I actually did it. All of sudden, something came over me.  I realized that I felt great. AND I WANTED TO DO MORE. I WANTED TO RUN IT FASTER.  I learned that achievement is addicting.  It's also contagious.

The following Christmas, my sister who was overweight came to me and told me that she was inspired by what I did. She told me that she wanted to change, and that she didn't want to see her two young daughters turn into her. She wanted them to learn that you can do anything you put your mind to. So she asked me if I would help train her to run a 5k, the 2010 Go! St. Louis 5k. We got right to work. That April, my sister had lost close to 80 lbs, and finished her first 5k.  And I cried as I crossed the finish line. Not for myself, but because I was so happy for my sister and her achievement.  But like myself, she wasn't done.

We ran more races together, including the Cardinals Care 6k, and in 2011, we ran the Go! 5k, and the Half Marathon in the same weekend. Her two daughters joined in the fun, finishing the Read, Right, and Run Marathon. The picture of the 4 of us with our medals is truly one of the great memories in my life. My sister still continues her journey, where she is providing inspiration to young girls with Girls on The Run.

So why do I run? I run for my sister and the inspiration she provides. I run for my nieces, who have also found a love of running. I run for my wife and family, so that I can be around. I run for myself, because I can always do better.

I have seen first hand the magic that Go! St. Louis has provided to the youth of St. Louis. I have enjoyed seeing the kids cross the finish line. The outreach that Go! St. Louis provides is important work, and I'm proud to run for this cause.  Below is a description of what your donation will go to.... Any amount helps, and I cannot thank you enough for your support of me in this cause.

Thanks,

Kevin

GO! St. Louis Team for Kids is the official charity team for GO! St. Louis.  This exciting new team will help you train for a race at the 2012 GO! St. Louis Marathon & Family Fitness Weekend®, while raising funds to help us in our mission to fight the raising rate of youth obesity.

We created this new team out of an increased interest in expanding our local youth fitness initiatives at a time of crisis for many young children, who continue to fight a lack of physical exercise and ultimately an obesity problem than can lead to a lifetime of health issues. We have expanded our youth programs over the years to reach at-risk children – more than 20,000 in 2011, but we need to do more, and we need your help.

Your Investment in GO! St. Louis Team for Kids, either by joining the team or making a one-time individual tax deductible donation by clicking the green Donate button on the right, will support our current youth programs: GO! St. Louis Read, Right & Run Marathon®  (RRRM) and Students on the GO! (SOTG).

The GO! St. Louis Read, Right & Run Marathon program encourages children in grades K- 8 to be reading proficient, physically fit and community minded by challenging them to READ 26 books, RIGHT the community with 26 good deeds, and RUN 26.2 miles over a six month period.  It is a standards-based, sustainable, enrichment program that endorses and supports existing school curriculum.  In 2012, more than 22,000 students from 250 schools are participating.

Students on the GO!, a program for high school students, targets at risk kids in St. Louis and provides them with an opportunity to focus on accomplishing a challenging goal of running the April GO! St. Louis Half Marathon.  The program engages them to experience the benefits of goal setting, discipline, teamwork, improved health and a feeling of accomplishment in a positive environment.  In 2012, approximately 150 – 175 students from eight schools will cross the Finish Line!
