BENEFITING: Girls on the Run - Chicago
ORGANIZER: Girls on the Run - Chicago
EVENT: 2017 GOTR Chicago Marathon
EVENT DATE: Oct 08, 2017
As many of you may already know, Girls on the Run is near and dear to my heart. Simply put, GOTR is an afterschool program that transforms the way girls see themselves and their opportunities. The goal is to unleash confidence through accomplishment, while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness. The mission is achieved by volunteer coaches who meet with the girls as a team twice per week for 10 weeks as they complete the curriculum which creatively integrates running, goal-setting and training for a non-competitive 5k (3.1 miles) running event with interactive lessons that encourage positive social-emotional and physical development among participants. I am an active board member to my local council - Girls on the Run South Alabama.
On Sunday, October 8, 2017, I am running 26.2 miles to participate in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in order to raise money for GOTR-Chicago. Here's why: A strong sense of self and confidence is critical to a young woman's healthy and happy living. I have seen, first hand, how GOTR changes lives. GOTR teaches a girl how to push past her perceived boundaries and do the seemingly impossible.
I am not a strong nor a fast runner. I never anticipated I would run a marathon. This will be a challenge, but I am committed. I run because, if these girls can push past their mental boundaries, I can too. I run because I want to be the person I desperately needed when I was younger. I run because, despite the perceived imperfections I see when I look in the mirror, this body is healthy and strong and so is my spirit. I run because I want to inspire and be inspired.
My goal is to raise $2,500.00 before race day. This money is important. GOTR is a non-profit organization. The program cannot survive without donations. More than 85% of girls taking part in the GOTR program receive financial assistance. All funds raised by this Team go to underwrite program scholarships for GOTR-Chicago so that any girl can participate in this life-changing programing, regardless of her family's ability to pay the program fee.
Please consider donating. EVERY donation has an impact.
$10 covers the cost of one girl's healthy snacks for a season.
$25 covers the cost of 150 bananas for the 5k finish line.
$44 covers the cost of 50 tiaras for girls to decorate at the activities tent at the 5k.
