BENEFITING: Girls on the Run - Chicago
ORGANIZER: Girls on the Run - Chicago
EVENT: 2017 GOTR Chicago Marathon
EVENT DATE: Oct 08, 2017
On October 4, 2017 I will turn 30 years old and on October 8, 2017 I will run my first marathon. While I have been a 'runner' since college, I have never run a full marathon and although it's an item on my bucketlist, I've long doubted my ability to do something so physically and mentally challenging. This year, just days after I celebrate a milestone in my life, I am going to prove myself wrong by running 26.2 miles and crossing the finish line with a smile on my face. In addition to training for and running the marathon, I have a goal of supporting Girls on the Run by raising $1,200 for their Chicago chapter.
Why Girls on the Run?
Since I started running, I've found that I've become stronger, healthier, and more confident. Running makes me feel like I can do anything and helps me overcome life's various obstacles and challenges. Running also makes me see and appreciate my physical and mental strength, which is something I struggled with growing up and even into adulthood. Girls on the Run aims to teach girls to be healthy, confident, and joyous from a young age. The program shows girls that they are strong, unique, and beautiful. This is something that I passionately feel every girl, no matter her age, should feel and see in themselves. This is why I run for myself and why I run for Girls on the Run.
More about Girls on the Run - Chicago: Girls on the Run is an afterschool program for girls ages 8-14 that uses the power of running to inspire girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. The program combines training for a non-competitive 5k running event with interactive lessons that encourage positive social-emotional and physical development among participants. When girls participate in this program they exhibit improved self-esteem, body size satisfaction, and physical activity behaviors to a statistically significant extent(!). Girls also show positive changes regarding attitudes towards physical activity, healthy behaviors, and empowerment.
Because more than 85% of girls taking part in the Chicago area programs receive some sort of financial assistance to participate, all funds raised by the Girls on the Run SoleMates Team (the team I am fundraising for) go to underwrite program scholarships so that any girl can participate in this life-changing programing, regardless of her family's ability to pay the program fee.
