BENEFITING: Girls on the Run - Chicago
ORGANIZER: Girls on the Run - Chicago
EVENT: GOTR Chicago Marathon 2016
EVENT DATE: Oct 09, 2016
I am so excited to be running my first marathon this fall! When I was considering running the Chicago Marathon in 2016, I decided that if I was going to run 26.2 miles, I wanted to make the miles count by running through the Charity Program. In the end, I decided to run for Girls on the Run Chicago.
Girls on the Run is an afterschool program for girls from 8 to 14 years old. Volunteer coaches meet with a team of girls twice a week for 12 weeks, as the team of girls completes a program that combines running, goal-setting, and training for a 5k running event. This year, Girls on the Run Chicago will serve more than 11,000 girls, and around 85% of those girls will receive scholarships to participate in the program. All of the funds that I raise through my Chicago Marathon experience will provide scholarships for those girls.
I began running in 6th grade, when I was 11 years old. Ever since then, running has played a huge role in my life. Running has kept me physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy through all of life's ups and downs. When I lace up my running shoes and head out the door, I feel a sense of empowerment knowing that I am improving myself through strengthening my body and clearing my mind. I was fortunate enough to be on a cross-country and track team through college, and I truly believe in the power of being part of a team. Many of my supportive teammates throughout the years have become some of my closest friends.
I chose to run for the Girls on the Run charity team because I know that the program helps to provides girls with the same positive experience that I had through running.
Please help me reach my fundraising goal of $1,000, and join in the excitement leading up to the Chicago Marathon on October 9th!
