BENEFITING: Girls on the Run - Chicago
ORGANIZER: Girls on the Run - Chicago
EVENT: GOTR Chicago Marathon 2016
EVENT DATE: Oct 09, 2016
Six or seven years ago, one of my teaching friends asked if I was interested in working with a couple parents to coach a Girls On The Run club at our school.
The only running I had done up to that point was running to catch a bus or because I was being chased in a game of tag when I was a kid. I thought, "What do I have to lose? If my third graders could train to run a 5k, why couldn't I?"
That GOTR season marked the beginning of my love for running. Since then, I have run several 5ks and 3 half-marathons.
Running has become a part of my life. It's what I do when I'm under stress or need a little boost in energy. It's been a way to prove to myself that I can do anything.
Enter in the 2016 Chicago Marathon.
For a long time, I said I'd never do a marathon. Partially because I thought maybe I couldn't. Partially because I wasn't sure my body was built for running that far. After finishing the 2015 Mag Mile Women's Half-Marathon this past year in my best time yet, I thought I was ready for a new challenge.
It is an honor for me to be running the 2016 Chicago Marathon in support of an organization that inspires and empowers so many to accomplish more than they ever thought possible... me included!
Although the final 26.2 miles of my journey will take place on October 9th, the first steps begin now. I look forward to sharing the entire experience of my very first full marathon with you, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart (and feet!) for the words of encouragement and donations to Girls On The Run that you provide along the way. :)
