BENEFITING: Girls on the Run - Chicago
ORGANIZER: Girls on the Run - Chicago
EVENT: GOTR Chicago Marathon 2016
EVENT DATE: Oct 09, 2016
Wow, one year later and I am at it again. I can’t be more excited to be training for my second marathon and to be able to not only raise funds for Girls on the Run but to also to run the 2016 Chicago Marathon in honor of a wonderful friend and mentor who passed earlier this year, Vito Bianco. I know Vito was proud of the fundraising I did for GOTR last year as well as supporting my effort to realize my marathon dream. All the while he and his family were facing a new threat to Vito’s life, Peripheral T-Cell non-hodgkins lymphoma. If anyone was going to face this new threat with a smile and positive attitude, it was Vito. I was blessed to be hired to be Vito’s Assistant in 2010. Through our work pairing and my friendship with he and Linda, I learned to listen, to be patient and how to gracefully conquer the difficulties we all face in our life. He moved on much to soon and at the young age of 77.
Girls on the Run represents and supports these same characteristics and traits. Over 100, 000 volunteers served over 185,000 girls in all 50 states including District of Columbia in 2015. Dedicated GOTR Coaches meet with 3rd – 8th grade girls twice a week in small teams providing a three part curriculum of understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large. Running is the vehicle used to inspire and motivate girls, to encourage lifelong health and fitness, and build confidence through accomplishment. The season culminates with a 5k running event each girl and her running buddy take part in. There is nothing like running with a young girl as she runs her first 5k and then crosses her first ever finish line. I encourage anyone interested to experience as a volunteer the wonder of these young girls as they realize the impossible is possible and that they can.
I am excited to share with my family once again the thrill of completing the Chicago Marathon, this time in Vito's honor and helping to support the vision and mission of GOTR.
Learn. Dream. Live. Run.
I look forward to seeing you at the finish line October 9, 2016.
Thank you for your support.
Vito this runs for you!
