At Girls on the Run, our mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. At Girls on the Run of NOVA, we envision a world where each girl knows she has the ultimate power to be her best.
GOTR NOVA serves girls in 3rd – 8th grade throughought Northern Virginia. Each season, GOTR NOVA offers the Girls on the Run curriculum over a 10-week period, typically as an afterschool program. The program is delivered by trained Volunteer Coaches who guide and mentor participants through a 20-lesson curriculum that consists of three parts: understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork, and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large. Physical activity, specifically running, is woven into the GOTR program to help build habits that lead to a lifetime of health. Running is also a tangible way to show girls the value of commitment and goal setting. Best of all, running is a self-competitive sport and the focus is always on self-improvement, not on besting another girl.
At the end of each season, girls participate in the GOTR 5k -- a celebratory, non-competitive event and the culminating experience of the curriculum. Families are encouraged to prepare for and run the 5k alongside their participant. Completing the 5k gives each girl an understanding of the confidence that comes from accomplishment as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals, large and small.
