Govans Elementary School students need more opportunities to develop physical fitness and life skills. That's why this fall Assistant Principal Bernarda Kwaw and a group of staff members started Govans Girls on the Go (GGG), a running club that promotes nutrition, fitness, goal setting, decision-making skills, and health living.
GGG meets Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 2:30pm - 3:30pm and uses the Kids Run the Nation Program, a youth running program designed to meet the physical activity goals outlined by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for children in grades kindergarten through sixth grade.
This spring we hope to join Girls on the Run of Central Maryland, a 10 week program that culminates each season in a 5K intramural event. The Girls on the Run lessons encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. Participants explore and discuss their own beliefs around experiences and challenges girls face at this age. They also develop important strategies and skills to help them navigate life experiences.
The only thing holding us back is the fee of $150/student. We aim to raise $2,250 to enroll 15 students.
Please support the Govans Girls on the Go running club. One day these girls will run the world!
