Alternative Grad Gift for a cause!
Organized by: Celeste Reppond
EVENT DATE May 12, 2014
Hey family and friends!
As graduation is approaching, it has given me some time to reflect on the past 4 years and what I have treasured most about my college experience. I have realized that I have been profoundly impacted by some amazing organizations that are fighting for causes that have become very dear to my heart.
In college, my eyes have been opened to the tragedy of human trafficking both domestically and internationally, as well as the desperate need for smart business partnerships and micro finance in the developing world.
My encounters with these issues will have profound affect on how I choose to live the rest of my life, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Two organizations that have impacted me in particular are The Gray Haven and Jesus' Economy.
The first, The Gray Haven, is where I interned last summer. The Gray Haven provides holistic aftercare to victims of human trafficking in Central VA. Already, since opening in 2012, they have served over 30 survivors of human trafficking, and they are just getting started!
They are amazing, generous people who taught me what it means to see and love people's spirits beyond all outer appearances, along with many other important life lessons.
The second, for which I am currently interning, is Jesus' Economy. They are dedicated to comprehensive community restoration in the developing world through micro-loans, church planting, and caring for basic needs of the community. They just began in 2013, and have already launched their first project in Bihar, India and are building water wells!
The couple that started JE, John and Kalene Barry, have taught me great things from afar in these last few months. A few of these lessons include learning how to blog from the best, and learning how to depend on the Lord to move in powerful ways for justice and the dignity of all people.
As I am graduating, I am looking for ways I can say "thank you" to the organizations who have invested so much in me and changed the way I see the world.
One way I would love to give back is financial donation as well as raising awareness about these awesome causes. I ask that you consider the following proposition: If you have already considered giving a graduation gift, I ask that you consider instead graciously giving to one of these organizations instead.
There are a couple ways I hope to raise money for them.
FIrst, after graduation, I will be roadtripping home with my friend Michele, and both loving the outdoors, we plan on making hiking a big part of our trip. I would love to bring family, friends, and causes I love into this journey! I would like to do this by asking those who may have already considered giving to consider donating per mile we hike- which will be around a total of 100 miles over 2.5 weeks (that's the goal!).
The way this would work is through an initial pledge per mile, and a donation at the end of the trip on May 26th to the organization you choose.
I will be keeping track of how much we hike and walk with a pedometer, and posting updates and pictures all along the way.
Here are just a couple ways this could break down:
10 cents/mile- .10 x 100 miles= $10
25 cents/mile- .25 x 100 miles= $25
50 cents/mile- .50 x 100= $50
$1/mile- 1 x 100= $100
If this is not the option you prefer, you might also consider donating directly instead. This can be done directly through Crowdrise, and there is an option to leave a comment to specify where you'd like the money to go, and I will make a large donation in the name of "Celeste's graduation" when I arrive home. 100% of donations go to these organizations.
Thank you for your consideration and presence (be it near or far) in my life. I am the woman I am today thanks to the investment of many, many of you incredible people who have loved and sacrificed a lot for me.
More personal thanks are to come, but I want to make sure and acknowledge the significance and privilege I've had to know and share life with every single one of you.
I am grateful for the opportunity to bring many of you in to the journey that begins a great post-college adventure along with causes I love. Whether or not you choose to give, I am overjoyed just knowing we've got friends and family supporting us along the way!
With much love,
