Alter the life chances of rural households through safe water and sanitation; support the cause of dignified quality of life for 6,000 plus households in states of Odisha and Jharkhand in India by raising $100,000.
“The dignity of women in rural areas dies twice everyday”, said Malati, a 70-year-old woman, in Atabira area of Sambalpur district located at India's eastern state of Odisha. Joe Madiath and colleagues had then initiated Gram Vikas’s work building toilets and compost pits for rural households in early 1990s. This was when they met Malati and heard what she had to say. Startled, Joe asked Malati to elaborate. She then added - “We have to go out twice everyday to relieve ourselves near the village pond and then bathe there in open sight before returning home. A little of everyone dies, every time we do this”.
That got Joe and colleagues back to the drawing board. They returned with an experimental project that added three walls and extended the roof to weave in a bathing room to the toilet unit. The toilet-bathing room unit was supplied water through pipes, by lifting water to an overhead reservoir from a safe local source. That was the beginning of Gram Vikas' journey in Water and Sanitation. All along it has remained committed to appropriate technology that keeps costs down while not compromising on ‘value’.
Water & Sanitation
Importance of safe sanitation facilities and clean water can never be overemphasised. These are fundamental to healthy living. In 2010 the UN recognised “the right to safe and clean water and sanitation as a human right that is essential for the full enjoyment of life and all human rights”. More recently, the UN has added ”ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all” as Sustainability Goal #6. https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/?menu=1300#.
A recently released Swachhta (sanitation) Status Report by the National Sample Survey Organization of Government of India has estimated that 52.1% people in rural India continue to practice open defecation. Access to safe water still eludes nearly 38% of people in rural India.
Gram Vikas believes access to clean drinking water & construction of a toilet & bathroom is a vital family resource to restore the dignity of these underprivileged people. Till date, Gram Vikas has provided 24X7 piped water supply to every family having its own toilet and bathing room in over 1200 villages impacting over 400,000 individuals. The intervention involves 100% community involvement & leverages innovations such as induced gravity flow technique. The challenge ahead becomes apparent from the macro data. There are miles to go before a basic human right becomes available to a vast majority of rural Indians that, in turn would allow them to enjoy the fruits of life and give expression to their inherent talents. Gram Vikas continues to pursue the dream articulated by Malati with missionary zeal. In the current year, it aims to assist 6707 rural households in the states of Odisha and Jharkhand to acquire the total sanitation solution for a dignified quality of life.
