BENEFITING: CAMP ARANUTIQ
EVENT DATE: Mar 11, 2012
GrandStand: Paddling the Grand. Taking a stand for our transgender and gender-variant kids.
This March I will be taking a challenging 21-day kayaking trip through the Grand Canyon. Such a challenge is nothing, however, compared to the challenges faced by kids who are gender-variant or transgender in a society still plagued by prejudice toward them and misunderstanding about gender identity.
Camp Aranu’tiq is a pioneering camp where these courageous kids can be true to themselves and are welcomed and embraced. It is a wonderful place where they can spend a week in an open, accommodating and affirming environment just being kids at summer camp and enjoying all the activities that come with such an experience. For more information go to: http://www.camparanutiq.org/
I’ve never done a personal fundraiser for a cause before, but I’m using this opportunity of the trip of my lifetime to support a camp offering life-changing experiences for transgender and gender-variant kids. We all know how tough the teenage years are for anyone. Imagine adding the complexity of being transgender or gender-variant. Camp Aranu’tiq brings kids who are facing these challenges together from across the country to build new friendships and gain confidence and strength for becoming the persons they know they truly are inside.
The camp is run by volunteers and offers generous scholarships to assure that kids from all walks of life can be a part of this camp experience. Your support will help ensure that the camp can provide such opportunities.
“GrandStand” is my humble effort to take a grand stand for these remarkable and courageous kids as I paddle the Grand Canyon. I’d like to envision us filling the grandstands of a large stadium with supporters. Please consider a donation to Camp Aranu’tiq in any amount. If you’d like to relate your amount to my Grand Canyon trip, here are some numbers to consider:
• 21 days on the river (about $1 per day: Class II supporter @ $25)
• 226 miles (about a quarter per mile: Class III supporter @ $50 )
• 105 major rapids (about a $1 per rapid: Class IV supporter @ $100)
Your donation can be anonymous or you are welcome to add your name to the roster of supporters that appears on the webpage (just follow the directions to express your preference). For you non-river runners the classifications above are rapids ratings, but contributions of any amount are classy! And any contributions above Class IV are world class.
Please note that the website host for this fundraiser, Crowdrise, charges a small transaction fee (5%). So that you know that the full value of your donation is going to the camp, I will pay 5% of all the donations routed through GrandStand as an additional donation from me to Camp Aranu’tiq.
And yes, I have a very personal reason for supporting Camp Aranu’tiq. My daughter, Lexi, attended last summer and had the time of her life. She can’t wait to return this coming summer to see old friends, make new ones and have the kind of summer camp experience that all kids should have.
