Here’s the truth people: I turn 42 on November 12th (according to my stem cell docs, I'm really only three and a half…). I want to celebrate the marathon of my life, and honor all the people who got me to this point, by running two birthday month marathons and raising $42,000 for Grassroot Soccer (GRS). Oy veh! I will be running the NYC Marathon on November 1st and the Seattle Marathon on November 29th—aided in my efforts by Seattle Genetics and some fly Puma running gear.
This is an opportunity to honor all the folks who helped reassemble my body. My body is bones, flesh and organs, but it’s also my brother Lee’s stem cells, my friend’s platelets, my family's blood transfusions, my doctor’s chemotherapy, and most importantly it’s strength and spirit sustained by all the virtual hugs and support of family, friends and fans near and far.
The funds we raise will support the implementation of Grassroot Soccer’s innovative youth development curricula in communities across sub-Saharan Africa and beyond.
Every $50 we donate will send a young person through our life skills and health education programs - because together we have the power to empower young people to make informed choices and avoid preventable diseases like HIV and malaria.
And here’s the kicker:
Friends of GRS have agreed to double your donations! Matched 1:1
Every dollar you offer will be matched by this generous group of rock stars. We can do so much good for so little.
Won’t you join me in this crazy endeavor?
Love and Gratitude for all that you do,
Grassroot Soccer is an adolescent health organization that leverages the power of soccer to educate, inspire and mobilize at-risk youth to overcome their greatest health challenges, live healthier lives and be agents for change in their communities. GRS connects young people with the mentors, information, and health services they need to thrive, and empowers adolescents to make educated choices about pressing health challenges such as HIV & AIDS, sexual health, gender-based violence, and malaria.
