BENEFITING: GRASSROOT SOCCER
ORGANIZER: GRASSROOT SOCCER
EVENT DATE: Nov 03, 2013
On November 3rd 2013, I will be running in the New York City Marathon to raise money for Grassroot Soccer (GRS), a non-profit organization that uses the power of soccer to educate, inspire and mobilize youth to stay HIV/AIDS free and lead healthy, productive lives. The task of completing my first full marathon feels daunting, but I’ve been pounding the pavement with a smile on my face knowing that my efforts will benefit such a worthy cause.
By running the NYC marathon, I seek to fulfill two ambitious goals: to complete the run without sustaining any bodily harm, and to raise $3,000 for Grassroot Soccer. The money I raise will help support Grassroot Soccer’s life-changing HIV/AIDS prevention programs, providing funds for materials and equipment, HIV testing events, coach and mentor stipends, and more. I hope you will consider helping me reach my $3,000 fundraising mark, and I greatly appreciate any contribution you would be willing to make toward this goal. All donations are, of course, tax deductible.
While young people in Africa have been the hardest hit by HIV/AIDS, they are also the greatest force for change. Grassroot Soccer leverages this potential by empowering youth with the knowledge, skills and support they need to break the cycle of AIDS and transform the course of their lives. To date, GRS has graduated over 500,000 youth from their proven program. By the next World Cup in 2014, GRS hopes to double their impact, educating one million young people about HIV/AIDS and inspiring them to live healthier, more productive lives.
I spent much of 2006/2007 working with Grassroot Soccer in South Africa—an experience that set me on a path toward my previous job with Football for Hope and my current graduate school program. My time with GRS convinced me that HIV/AIDS is preventable and that local community leaders can play a powerful role by educating and mentoring those around them, even in the hardest hit communities. In the absence of effective government services, well-run NGOs like GRS play a crucial role in sparking social change at the local level and building collaborations and partnerships to broaden the impact of effective approaches.
You can make a difference. Please join me in supporting this important cause.
