THE STORY:

Anyone that knows me, knows how much i love football (Soccer to the Yanks reading) and also how i feel it is the greatest sport in the world, by a distance.

Football is its own language, take a ball anywhere in the world and a kid will want to play. Go in to the Amazon - not the website - and a tribe child with no TV/Radio/Internet will somehow know Steven Gerrard – watch the Beckham documentary for evidence of this. This was also highlighted with the recent boy in Afghanistan with the Messi carrier bag he wore as a shirt (story is here). In that moment he was living the same dream we all dream, of growing up playing for our favourite team. He forgot war, he forgot his struggles, he forgot that he lives in one of the most dangerous places in the world, he was just having fun, as his hero. In that briefest of moments, nothing else mattered. And that is why i have teamed up with GRASSROOT SOCCER in raising funds via the NYC marathon.

I did not know who 'GRS' were or what they did until they contacted me, so i am sure most of you reading this will not either - so here is a little background in to what they do...

"Grassroot Soccer is an adolescent health organization that uses the power of soccer to educate, inspire, and mobilize young people to lead healthier lives and be agents for change in their communities supporting its life-saving health education and empowerment programs in Africa and beyond.

Every £15 provides another young person with a fun, interactive, and safe space to learn about critical health issues, including HIV.

Join us in bringing an end to the HIV epidemic by starting with the young people who have the power to end it."

£15 is roughly $26, that would be $1 for each mile i run.

£15/$26 is nothing to most people i know. It's a beer or two at Yankee Stadium, it's 25% of ONE ticket at Anfield, its a Pizza, a Burger, a Movie it's nothing. Surely that £15/$26 is better spent on improving peoples lives who are exactly the same as me and you, other than we had the luck and fortune to plop out of our Mum's in a country where there is Health, Food, Water, Education, Vaccinations, Medicine, Law, Order, Peace...

Most of you reading this will be in a comfy house, full up on food, sat on a comfy sofa and surfing the internet – and I am too. It is not a bad thing and I am not saying you’re a bad person! We should be enjoying our comforts, why not? I know I do. But take 10 minutes out and put yourself in their shoes. Would you have handled being a kid in Africa? Born into a community riddled with AIDS and no idea why or how to change it? A mum having to breastfeed their child not knowing that they are infecting their child with the same illness? Your friends dying around you, your parents passing away in your early years, no hope, no future just born into a destiny of struggle and sickness. I know I couldn’t.

If i have not made you feel guilty enough to donate just £15/$26, let me know, i have plenty more that i can try with!

Thank You in advance for anybody that does sponsor me, it is very much appreciated.

A very proud 'Red',

Chris
