From a very young age, my mom would throw me into all kinds of sports and activities. She also brought me on all types of adventures, from the trollies of San Francisco, to the creepy caves in New Mexico, to the gorgeous mountaintops of New England. She instilled a love of adventure in me that will never leave. Which is one of the reasons I'm running my first marathon in November... without ever running another race longer than 5 kilometers. Is that ridiculous? Should I have prepped myself with a 10k or a half marathon?
But I love adventure, and I also love rapid growth and change. Which is another reason I’m running my first marathon in November. I’m makin' changes in my life – checkin’ one thing off my bucket list at the ripe age of 28. I’ll also be much healthier and in shape than I was last year. But is MY health and well-being the only important thing in this world?
Which brings me to yet another reason I’m running my first marathon: I care about other people’s health and well-being, rapid growth and change, and love of adventure too! Did I mention my favorite sport that my mom threw me into was Soccer? I've been playing it off and on since around 5 years old and I still love it. I think when done right, it teaches great lessons about passion, teamwork, resiliency, being in the moment, patience, and tireless persistence. Is this where the inspirational music comes in?
Like any sport or community activity, Soccer can take our minds off the bad stuff happening around us so we can focus on the good things we have close by. It can give us support through the difficult things in life that really weigh us down. It can make us feel empowered and alive, and ready to accomplish anything no matter what gets in our way.
Most of us are fortunate to live and have grown up in a country where we have access to these kinds of things right away. It’s pretty normal. However, in other places around the world, it can be few and far between. This is why I chose to run with Grassroot Soccer (GRS). In my eyes, they do it right. They combine the fun and inspirational benefits of Soccer with education and community, and bring it all to the kids who wouldn’t have it otherwise.
If you’re like me and you love adventure, making good changes, staying healthy, and helping the world somehow, then please consider sponsoring me in my fundraiser so that other young ones around the world can feel that love too. I’ve given $150 to this cause and I encourage you to match me if you can… no movie pun intended. But of course, anything at all will help. As it says below, $25 is enough to support one youngen through GRS’s core program.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story and learn a little bit about me and GRS. You have our whole-hearted thanks and undying gratitude!
About Grassroot Soccer
Grassroot Soccer (GRS) is an adolescent health organization that uses the power of soccer to educate, inspire, and mobilize young people to lead healthier lives and be agents of change in their communities. Since 2002, GRS has reached over 1.9 million young people with critical health information & life skills programs.
It only costs $25 to support one young person through GRS's core program and provide them with access to an HIV test. Together, you can help us reach an additional 6,000 adolescents in 2017!
