Some folks have been in this camp for upwards of 5 months and their shoes are toast. With your contribution I was able to buy 103 pairs of shoes See More
I am currently in Greece at what has been deemed the worst refugee camp in Greece for violence, rape and living conditions. The situation is very dire and the amount of volunteers here fluctuate a lot so organization and routine are difficult. The need is large and the amount of people helping is not enough but we are doing our best. The camp was meant to be temporary, meaning refugees pass through in one or two days but many have been here 4+ months. The camp is in the actual port and it's a wild juxtaposition between an asphalt tent city and giant cruise ships. The people sleep in tents on hard cement with only military blankets to soften their sleeping. The sun beats down like an incessant drum every day raising tensions and testing limits.
I came here to help in any way I could and have found myself working everyday with the kids and the organization Drop in the Ocean. There are many children of all ages and they are all so beautiful! It's a constant assault of love! They want to hug you, kiss you and play play play so that is what we do. We have some donations like art supplies and toys and games and we are constantly giving things out to the kids.
I am funded myself so all the money that I will receive from here goes directly to the refugees. I am asked daily if I can get people things like tweezers, coffee, nappies, thread, bags, sunscreen, food...it goes on and on. I have been spending my own money on these things but it's becoming too much. The other big problem is that the food they receive from the govt. is hardly edible nor nutritious and over last week the adjoining camp and the one I'm at got food poisoning from the rations. 700+ Babies and adults ended up in the hospital. As a result people don't want to eat the rations understandably. There is a group here that is cooking a meal daily but they rely solely on donations so your money would help directly with getting nutrition to these wonderful people. I say wonderful because my heart is lifted high everyday by some small acts of generosity and ultimate kindness. There are all kinds here of course but no one deserves to live in these conditions. Please if you've ever wanted to help I can make a direct difference right here right now!
