I am walking with Greenaction on April 28, 2012 because it supports low-income urban and rural communities and Native American Nations that are fighting pollution and toxics in their backyard.
The dirty secret of the environmental field is this -- that while the whole world is now "green" and concerned about climate change, institutionalized inequality and racism still mean low-income communities, communities of color, and Native American lands are targeted as sites for hazardous waste and polluting industries. For instance, all hazardous waste dumps in California are in low-income Latino communities. And such polluters frequently violate environmental regulations, transparency requirements and civil rights laws. The toxics and pollution that these communities are subjected to have a real impact -- in Kettleman City, for instance, a tiny farmworker community in Central California, there is a horrifying rate of birth defects, miscarriages, infant death, and cancer. And the toxics and pollution that goes into the air, water and ground affect everyone and everything on this planet.
This type of environmental injustice is a critical weak link in the field of environmental protection, and social justice. It happens because corporate polluters and governments think that these communities are powerless, and that noone is watching or will fight back. But Greenaction is watching, and helps communities fight back. www.facebook.com/Greenaction4EJ
