Greening of Akron
Organized by: William Melver
Greening of Akron is a West Akron Kiwanis project that proposes to develop a corp of youths that will become engaged in building green landscapes and city infrastructures to mitigate and manage storm water over flows from our combined storm/sewer /waste water overflows(CSO) systems. The City of Akron is under an EPA mandate to bring our CSO within federal limits and guidelines. The City has operated outside these EPA limits for many years and are now under their watchful eyes. The West Akron Kiwanis club have launched this project, after learning that a similar approach was launched in Philadelphia, using the AmeriCorp model to form a corp of youths, using federal grants. The federal grants require 25% matching with local funds. The West Akron Kiwanis have donated the initial $2,000 seed money and now seek another $25,000 to be raised through crowd funding. Youths who participate in this project will learn valuable skills and certification in implementing green lifestyle skills and practices, enabling them to become gainfully employed to pursue careers in the rapidly expanding green industry.
