The Greening of Detroit’s mission is to guide and inspire the sustainable growth of a healthy urban community through trees, green spaces, food, education, training and job opportunities.
The organization was founded in 1989 with a mission to restore the city’s once tree-lined boulevards and wooded neighborhoods, which for decades, had been decimated by disease, storms, and attrition. For two decades, The Greening’s youth programming has helped foster Detroit’s next generation of environmental stewards -- from pre-school children that attend our Camp Greening summer program to elementary school students who learn about scientific investigation at Rouge Park to the teens that participate in our Green Corps youth employment program.
The Greening of Detroit's Our LAND (Learn, Admire, Nurture and Dream) program serves students in grades 4 thru 8 in Detroit schools, and connects students to their local forests through yearlong classroom activities, on-site field experiences and service learning opportunities taking place in River Raisin, their nearby Federal Land, and Rouge Park, Detroit’s only section of riparian forest. Our place-based education approach boosts student achievement and demonstrates to youth how local citizens can improve their community’s urban forest, environmental quality and social vitality.
Children served by these programs reside in families that often face financial and transportation obstacles that prevent their access to other programs held in suburban and rural communities. Most of these children also face barriers to academic success and many need additional year-round support to improve their science learning skills.
