BENEFITING: APNE AAP INTERNATIONAL INC
Imagine yourself as a twelve-year-old girl, who has been kidnapped from the love and security of your family to work as a sex slave. A situation worse than this would be if your family had sold you into this life of prostitution. According to Rachel Lloyd in an article about sex trafficking, “Trafficking for sexual exploitation is one of the fastest-growing organized crimes, generating $27.8 billion each year. The collapse of communism in Eastern Europe and Indochina, which opened up markets for commercial sex, and globalization have added to the problem” (halftheskymovement.org).
As a result of this startling fact as well as many other related details, worldwide organizations are coming to the aid of these young girls. One such organization is Apne Aap, whose mission “is to increase choices for at-risk girls and women in order to ensure access to their rights, and to deter the purchase of sex through policy and social change.” Its “vision is a world where every woman and girl can realize her full potential” (apneaap.org).
I am a thirteen-year-old female of Indian descent. Because of the events in India related to the ill treatment of women and girls, I am particularly motivated to become involved in this Half the Sky initiative. My mother introduced me to this work, and I am currently researching and reading material about forced prostitution, gender-based violence, and sex trafficking. While I believe that education and economic empowerment are essential for women worldwide, these other areas concerning physical and mental abuse need the attention of the world to find solutions. My goal is to be a part of the solution for sex trafficking. As a young female who is blessed with everything these women do not have, I can begin to work now to make a difference with your financial help.
Therefore, I am asking for two things from you. Firstly, I encourage you to research the topic of sex trafficking so that you may better understand the urgent need for your help. Secondly, I ask you to make a financial contribution to the cause. Any amount is appreciated on behalf of these young girls.
