BENEFITING: Greyston Foundation, Inc.
Greyston Bakery is an awesome social enterprise that bakes amazing brownies and hires people from our local community...or as we like to say, "We don't hire people to bake brownies, we bake brownies to hire people!" Our new goal is to balance all of our sweet goodness with an incredible rooftop fruit and vegetable garden.
About our goal:
At Greyston, we strive to do more than bake brownies. We believe that nutritious meals can be incorporated at our bakery as part of a collaborative team effort to encourage healthy eating. We want to teach our team how to grow their own fruits and vegetables and to provide a weekly dish and recipe made with the fruits of our labor. We will be creating meals with ingredients grown from the garden as part of our sustainability measures. The weekly recipe cards that we will make and have is for the team to take nutrition from the bakery to bring back home. We also plan to use this garden in tours and have community volunteers come to learn about how to garden and organic healthy eating. Our collective environmental and community efforts have inspired others, and we hope this garden will too!
But first - we need to build the garden!
The profits from our bakery fund Greyston Foundation, which offers an integrated network of not-for-profit and for-profit companies in Yonkers, NY. Through the foundation we help provide jobs, workforce development, affordable housing, youth services, and health care to our community.
Since our funds are already fueling so many commendable efforts, we could really use your help to support this new goal. We want to plant on our rooftop, which is currently home to our new solar panels (another of our successful environmental efforts). We care about the environment and want to shout it from the rooftop!
All of the produce grown will be organic and or heirloom vegetables. We believe it's important to promote healthy eating with organic seeds, seedlings, and organic potting soil because GMO food or genetically modified vegetables can hinder a person's development.
