THE STORY:

We started a non-profit called the Global Resiliency Initiative to help children around the world using the proven science of positive psychology.  We would love for you to join us.

HUH?  WHAT ARE YOU GUYS TALKING ABOUT?
The Global Resiliency Initiative (GRI) brings hope and optimism to young boys and girls in developing nations through the science of positive psychology.  Working in schools and communities, GRI provides cutting-edge materials and training to empower children to be more resilient, optimistic and strengths-based.  For the Kenya Project, GRI is partnering with a local non-profit in Kenya that combats poverty and inequality by offering tuition free schools and social services for young girls. Together, they will be providing a life changing positive psychology curriculum in Kiberia, Kenya where 1 out of 5 children do not live to see their fifth birthdays.

WHO ARE THESE LUNATICS ASKING FOR MY COLD, HARD CASH?
It's simple - Carl and Kathy are two nerds living in Washington, DC that have a deep yearning to help others. Together, they have dreamed of starting a "do-good" organization years before GRI actually came about. With Carl's background in international development and positive psychology, Kathy's expertise in child development and language, and their desire to do good, they have developed a non-profit that develops customized educational materials to enhance the lives of children in developing nations by using the science of positive psychology.

During a conference in Boston in 2011, Carl met the perfect partner for the Kenya Project, Kennedy Odede.  Kennedy is the founder of an all girls school in Kenya, Shining Hope for Communities. His school has been featured on NBC's Rock Center (as reported by Chelsea Clinton) and in the New York Times. For the past year, Carl has partnered with Shining Hope's teachers and leadersl to develop an effective, research-based, positive psychology curriculum that has been customized for girls in the Kibera Slums.

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH THE MILLION DOLLARS I DONATE?
Your funds will be used to launch the Kenya Project where GRI will provide educational training and materials to girls living in one of the poorest slums of Kenya.  Initially, your contribution will help provide the GRI curriculum to approximately 100 girls between the ages of 10 and 14 years old.  Over time, your donation may help change the lives of thousands of girls who will gain access to the positive psychology training embedded in the school and community center.

The materials and training will teach these young girls to focus on their strengths and empower them to stay in school and raise themselves out of poverty. By staying in school, such young girls are much more likely to break the cycle of poverty that often leads to child marriage, teen pregnancy, and HIV/AIDS.

WHY DONATE?
Silly question.  A better question would be: "Why NOT donate?"  Hate young kids?  Don't like hope or optimism?  Think poverty is  joke?  I guess those might be good reasons...

The real reason is that now, after our blood, sweat and tears have been shed developing a program and providing informal training to the teachers of the school - we are ready to put it into action on the ground! The Kibera community and Shining Hope are eager for raw materials and a sense of hope and positivity. With these funds, we will provide the school and community center with GRI materials and training for years to come.

PLEASE JOIN US IN OUR CRAZINESS!
Your contribution is more than just a donation.  With your contribution, we invite you to become part of a movement that will change the lives of these young girls and many others.  We also welcome you to join our GRI family and grow with us as we work to instill hope and optimism in children around the globe.  You may just become part of something greater than yourself (or at least have something to laugh at if we fail).
