March 07, 2016
I have set up this fund for my cousin, Nick Griffin, and his family to help cover travel and lodging expenses as two of their three children seek medical treatment at two different hospitals hundreds of miles apart. Their youngest, Ty, was recently born premature at 31 weeks and is expected to remain at a hospital in Peoria, IL for the next 6-8 weeks due to some breathing complications and problems with his kidneys amongst other things. Nick is currently working over 60 miles from the hospital in Streator, IL. He needs to continue to work during this time to support the family, but he plans to travel to the hospital after his shift each day. His wife, Marley, will be traveling back and forth daily between their home and the hospital in Peoria during this time which is almost 30 miles each way. Marley is not able to work at this time due to the recent birth of the baby and needing to tend to their other two small children, both under the age of 3. To top everything off, their oldest son, Avery, now 2 1/2, was born premature at 32 weeks, and continues to have many health problems. Avery underwent an astonishing 16 surgeries in Peoria that lead to the unfortunate result of him having a colostomy bag. He continues to this day to have many intestinal issues and health concerns even after all those surgeries. The family recently sought medical advice from St. Louis Children's Hospital and have an appointment to meet with a surgeon to remove the colostomy bag and a dead portion of his colon in hopes of giving him a more vibrant, healthy life. Their meeting had to be pushed back due to the early arrival of baby Ty but is scheduled for March 21, 2016. Nick and Marley are being told that once the surgery is scheduled, Avery will likely remain in the hospital for 2-3 weeks to recover in St. Louis. Meanwhile, baby Ty will likely still be in the NICU in Peoria, Illinois and the family will be traveling between both hospitals, almost 180 miles apart. This fund is being set up to help cover lodging, gas, food, babysitter, and any unexpected expenses that may occur during this difficult time! They are a young family with three small children, all under the age of three, who work hard but unfortunately these lengthy hospital stays have placed a huge burden on them financially. Please help me help them be able to spend this precious time with their children and not have to worry about the cost of travel between hospitals!
