THE STORY:

GIVE A GRIT  + GET IT MATCHED = CHANGE A LIFE
Your sure fire way to be super awesome this holiday season.

Details and Directions:

  • Every dollar we raise online during the month of December will be matched by a very genererous anonymous donor.
  • Keep that awesomeness in mind while you read the story below.
  • Your gift of GRIT can be made in honor of your friend, mom, college roommate (no restrictions apply) and you can send them an ecard letting them know that you are changing a kid's life in their honor for the holidays. (make sure you select this option during your transaction).
  • These are too many directions - skip this sentence and get to the good stuff below.

What is Grit?   Grit help kids succeed not only in school but in life. Grit is perseverance, resilience and determination to meet the challenges life presents to you with optimism, professionalism and tenacity.

Why do kids need Grit? Research shows that the key to success for kids living in disadvantaged circumstances extends beyond helping them develop cognitive skills like reading and math. They need life skills and Grit.  The recently published book How Children Succeed suggests that, for kids living in poverty, academic skills are not all it takes to get through high school and start a bright future. It takes Grit– strength of character and persistence– to achieve a better life.

The Crossroads Difference: Grit in Action At Crossroads we level the playing field for low-income kids by giving them support, tools and skills they need to succeed. We help them understand why school is important and instill in them the Grit they need to face the world and make their way.  We provide access to unique and life changing opportunities and challenges that mold them into young leaders who face the world with optimism and perseverance.

Just one more thing- Drea's GRIT Story

When you visit Crossroads for Kids, you see joy and excitement on the faces of children all around you. But behind each of these smiles is a story of darkness and triumph, struggles and success. I know this, because I am one of these stories. My childhood was marked by darkness and abandonment but despite those odds, I found the strength - the GRIT- to persevere. I found that at Crossroads for Kids.

By the time I entered 1st grade, I had been homeless, experienced abuse and neglect, witnessed drug use and prostitution, and had been bounced around the foster care system. When my grandmother became my guardian, she did everything in her power to make sure I would be safe and have a support system – she enrolled me at Crossroads for Kids.

The Crossroads family is incredible. These are the people who help me through tough times, and who celebrate with me when I achieve my goals. Over the years that I have been part of the Crossroads family, I have learned to swim; discovered that I have what it takes to hike the Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming; found mentors who help with homework; and visited dozens of colleges throughout New England.

Today, I am a determined leader driven to change the world. The lessons I have learned at Crossroads for Kids have helped me find my passion as a mentor to other young people who are experiencing similar childhoods as I did. I feel lucky that so many people supported me during my darkest days and I am determined to make a mark on my own community – to guide the next generation of great leaders.

My life is changed because of the support of Crossroads' friends, family and donors. Today, I ask you to join me in ensuring Crossroads can continue to be a family for young people who are struggling, feeling alone, and in need of a second family to guide them and help them realize their full potential. Please, make a gift today - it will be a gift that will change a life forever.
