Each  year, hundreds of black bears and grizzly bears are killed because they have learned to seek out food near campgrounds, residences or businesses. Bears are normally shy around people, and avoid their  presence.  However, if they learn to depend on people-provided food like garbage, pet food, or compost, they can lose their natural fear, and become habituated to the presence of people.  It is sad but true that "a fed bear is a dead bear".  Our "Bear Safe Communities" program assists people who live in bear country to keep their home and businesses "Bear Safe" through proper management of food and food waste.
