BENEFITING: FREEDOM HOUSE FOUNDATION INC
The drug and alcoholism treatment program at Freedom House provides an overall therapeutic process that requires total abstinence. Our success rate is high, because our residents work hard on their recovery and on reclaiming their lives. In the beginning, there is little contact with spouses and children, but as recovery progresses, gradual steps are taken to re-unite a family that has been split apart by addiction.
Every year as part of that process, Freedom House hosts a holiday party/reunion for graduates, residents and their families, with a surprise visit from Santa bearing gifts for the children. Often, this is the highlight of the season for the little boys and girls who are suffering from the fall-out of addiction in their young lives.
But lives are being repaired and families have hope. Will was a teenager when his struggle with alcohol and drugs began. Fifteen years later, in 2008, he found himself at the doorstep of Freedom House after losing his job, his family and his hope. Will graduated from Freedom House in 2009. He was awarded custody of his daughter a year later, and now works at Freedom House as a primary counselor, giving to others what was given to him.
Will’s gratitude is clearly overflowing. He recalls his first encounter with his young daughter, then four, at the Freedom House Holiday Reunion. “When my daughter saw Santa enter the room with a bag full of presents, her eyes lit up while mine swelled with tears. At that moment, I saw what recovery could do for me and my little girl. I am so grateful to Freedom House for showing me the way. My hard work is paying off.”
How can you help? A gift of $25 will feed a parent and child at our holiday dinner and will purchase a gift for the child to take home at this special time of year. A gift of any amount will help make this an evening to remember for those who need it most.
