Could you face a Michigan winter without a warm coat? In the metro Detroit area, including the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods, thousands of needy children do not have adequate clothing and are at risk when the temperatures drop. However, thanks to Operation Warm, each of these children can be warm and toasty as they brave the cold in winter. Operation Warm is a local effort with national roots. Rotary Clubs in Detroit and Grosse Pointe raise funds and purchased new winter coats from the national Operation Warm clearinghouse at a cost of approximately $20 per coat. From 2012 though 2016, over $305,000 was raised and over 18,400 coats were purchased and distributed to agencies and schools in the metro area. These include Crossroads of Michigan, the National School Lunch Program in Grosse Pointe and Harper Woods, For the Seventh Generation, the Detroit International Academy for Young Women, Southwest Solutions, the Children’s Center of Detroit, Northeast Guidance Center, Matrix Human Services, and Molina Healthcare. $20 will buy a new coat for a needy child.
