Picture moving to a new place. You leave behind your home, your friends and family, your culture, your job. Maybe you made this move because you wanted to- because you wished to explore a new country and new possibilities. Maybe you didn't want to move- you had a prestigious job, a nice house, a comfortable lifestyle- but chose to sacrifice your comfort in hopes of providing your children with better opportunities for education and future success. Maybe you really didn't want to move, but feared for your life if you stayed and had to flee. Regardless of why you came, you find yourself in a new place. You are still learning the culture, the customs, and the laws of your new home. You don't speak the language well; you understand only part of what's being said. Think of all the little things which become a challenge. Imagine shopping without reading ingredients, going to the doctor without communicating symptoms, applying for jobs without understanding forms, attending parent conferences at school in which your child has to translate. Your education credentials in your home country may be invalidated. Your years of training and experience are hampered by difficulty talking with clients. Instead of running a company, you are competing with teenagers for minimum wage work. Now, how do you feel? English is a key component of success in America. The language can be a hurdle, but it can also be a key- unlocking potential and facilitating the pursuit of goals. GROW Northeast provides ESL classes in a culturally diverse part of Philadelphia. Students can enroll in courses ranging from beginner to advanced, participate in conversation cafes to gain real world experience speaking with volunteers, attend cultural programs, and find warm acceptance, support, and friendship. Homework help is provided for children, allowing parents to attend without paying babysitters. In the summer Citizenship Classes are held, to help smooth the path to naturalization for those ready to take that step. GROW Northeast is a 501(c)3 program of Northeast Community Church. The ministry is Biblically based, but services are open to all regardless of religion. Will you help unlock potential for hundreds of people? Will you help GROW help its neighbors in the city of brotherly love? Go to www.grownortheast.org to learn more about the program.
