SESSION DURATION  - 36 weeks (6 Six-week sessions)

CLASS SIZE -

  12 students (Tuesday & Saturday)

+ 12 students (Wednesday & Sunday)

    24 students x 6 sessions = 144 students

LOCATION - Twelve – 4”x10”x12” beds at Casa Belvedere's Nonno's Garden

CURRICULUM -  Till, Plant, Cultivate, Harvest, Clean, Prep, Cook and Serve

COMMUNITY NEED -  The community need for the “Grow, Cook, Eat and Learn” program will be to provide students the knowledge and importance of organic gardening.  With the rise in childhood obesity the lessons learned by this program will help students to make the healthy choice when choosing foods.  The knowledge of how to take a seed and grow it into produce will allow students to start gardens at home and share their information with family and friends.  Due to this program the community need for wholesome gardening will begin and hopefully take seed and help this generation to take an interest in putting down the electronics and picking up a till and gardening for a healthier future.

DEMOGRAPHICS -  The local demographics (per the NYC school aged projections) are that Staten Island has just under 100,000 school aged students.  28.7% of that population is overweight or obese according to the 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Survey.  If funding for “Grow, Cook, Eat and Learn” is received the hope is to grow the program into school-based organic gardening programs where students will attend the Casa Belvedere program and then take the knowledge learned back to their schools to tend to their school’s garden.
