Building Schools

“Our work is not just about sustainable design; it is about human centered design, a collaboration and sharing with the people who live in the communities where we build. They are as important as bricks and mortar we build with.”—Deborah Terhune, CEO & Founder of Growing Up Africa

About Our Current Project: the Devland Soweto Education Campus

Growing Up Africa partners with Basil Read, Builders, Barrow, TIBER, Group Five, AVENG, Metier, Geberit, Talisman, SIKA, and many other major stakeholders in what is known as the largest non-profit corporate collaboration in South Africa's building industry history.

Globally, philanthropic efforts are moving away from merely 'giving money,' towards 'giving back' in a more committed, engaged way, with companies and individuals taking a personal role and witnessing the results of their involvement.

At the heart of GUA's development model is the belief that people make things happen, not just money.

"By working together and combining the resources of national and international industry leaders, it is possible to improve the infrastructure of these communities and provide much-needed facilities," says Deborah Terhune, founder of GUA. The organization is currently developing an Education Campus in Devland, Soweto, a 2,000m2 multi-purpose education building situated on a 7,000 m2 site.  The building consists of classrooms, auditorium, dining room with cafeteria, admin office, a smaller auditorium for music and cultural activities, a facility that provides a safe and nurturing environment for collaborative and individual learning and growth. Soweto is a region challenged by racial tensions, extreme inequality and lack of infrastructure projects. Conversely, it is also an area identified with the potential to become an exemplary microcosm for sustainable and integrative urbanization.

Despite the economic challenges that the construction industry faces, local and international stakeholders have partnered together in what is considered the largest non-profit and corporate collaboration in South Africa's building industry history to make this project a reality.

In South Africa, Basil Read, TIBER, Group Five, Aveng Steeledale, as well as other key stakeholders including Boogertman & Partners, WACO Africa, Builders, Golden Triangle Development Company, TWP, WSP, Investec Property, Saint-Gobain, and many others are offering their professional services, leveraging the goodwill of their international counterparts, including US-based William Reue Architects who designed the project and SMEC, an international engineering company who is providing structural engineering and civil engineering design and professional services.

The Devland project will not only improve the prospects of the youth in the local community but also empower women in the community and open doors to numerous work possibilities. Also, the facility will provide teaching skills to local unemployed South Africans as well as further the City of Johannesburg's mission to provide education for all.
