THE STORY:

The students of Harmony DC Public Charter School need your help! Harmony DC PCS, grades K-5, is located in Northeast Washington, D.C. Their mission is to prepare students for higher learning in a safe, caring, and collaborative atmosphere through a quality learner-centered educational program with a strong emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Education at Harmony is student-centered and each child is recognized as a special individual with unique interests, needs, and abilities. The purpose of Harmony is to foster productive attitudes toward work, family, and community.  When students have a positive attitude towards learning, their perception of “school” transforms. With smaller classroom sizes and a hands on learning environment, students are able to transcend knowledge obtained from their textbooks and apply it to everyday activities within the classroom. The school, being a public charter, relies on government funding and the generosity of organizations such as Active 20/30 to make their vision a reality. Why A School Garden? A core part of the science curriculum aims to provide students with the understanding of horticulture, sustainability, and nutrition. Poor eating habits and lack of access to nutritional options continue to be a problem within inner city communities. Harmony DC PCS has the objective to provide students with healthy choices and promote healthy options from a young age. The garden will provide a great way for students to become engaged and active in their understanding of these key components of life. Being a small school, there is limited space on the property for outdoor extra circular activities. The garden will open the door for additional activities students can sign up for outside of the classroom. Benefits of the garden even extend to the teachers. Organizations such as DC Greens, will open their doors to teachers offering free trainings, access to educational supplies and field trip opportunities. Why $5,000? The vision and design of the garden is to transform what is now a trash filled, weed infested wasted alley space into a sustainable, year around outdoor learning environment. The way the space is now, it needs some serious preparation before construction can begin. The area needs to be cleared and leveled in many places so the area is stable and the ground suitable for plant vegetation. The garden will be sectioned off so that it resembles an outdoor classroom providing an area for the teacher to present, seating for the students, and small spaces to write. The wall behind the space currently has graffiti that will also be replaced with a small mural. It has been calculated that the preparation of the space, design, procurement of materials, and construction will require $5,000. Any bit amount you can contribute helps! The community build day is slated for mid-September and preparation will begin late August. If interested in volunteering, follow our Facebook page for more details to come.
