BENEFITING: GRASSROOT SOCCER
EVENT DATE: Jun 08, 2013
Hi I am running in the Chicago Half Marathon on 8th June 2013 in support of Grassroot Soccer (GRS).
Grassroot Soccer is a non profit organization that seeks to combat HIV/AIDS in Africa through educating boys and girls basic life skills and healthy behaviors in football (soccer) related activities. This program, also known as Skillz Curriculum, utilizes the power of soccer and the influence of local sporting heros and role models to spread the knowledge of HIV/AIDS in grassroots communities in Africa.
Numerous scientific evaluations—conducted by Stanford University’s Children’s Health Council, consultants from The Population Council and the Harvard School of Public Health, and researchers from Dartmouth College, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Cape Town— have documented the GRS model’s effectiveness in significantly reducing sexual risk behavior, decreasing stigma, and improving students’ knowledge, attitudes, communication, and decision-making skills related to HIV.
My relationship with GRS began in 2009 when I became part of the organizing team of the Lose The Shoes tournament in Hong Kong. In 2010, I, along with Ethan Woo, became the area coordinators of Grassroot Soccer in Hong Kong, and raised over 25,000 USD (198,000HKD) for the charity. In March 2011, I visited Grassroot Soccer Danielskuil, South Africa, and witnessed the implementation of the Skillz Curriculum.
This June, I am going to attempt something I have never done before in my life- running 13.1 miles (21 kilometers)
Please support Grassroot Soccer's continued effort in educating and preventing HIV/AIDS from spreading in Africa!
