If you had asked me 3 weeks ago if I would ever run more than a few miles, the answer would have been an unshakeable “No!”. I certainly consider myself to be athletic, but the concept of running (just to run) has always been foreign to me. If you give me a tennis racket, I’ll sprint for the ball before it hits the ground. Or if you put me on a soccer pitch, I’ll race the opponent to win the 50/50 ball. But to run without a purpose, other than to run, was not a concept I actively embraced until a few weeks back.
However, a special someone recently invited me to join them on a 10 mile run. While half of me laughed at the idea and the other half wanted to embrace the challenge, I agreed to join. With that said, I brought with me a public transportation pass – assuming I’d need to use it once I reached my breaking point. I was shocked to discover that I never reached that point and the pass went unused.
Inspired by this recent realization that “I can run,” I have decided to participate in the LA Marathon as part of a two-person relay. I’ve teamed up with a phenomenal organization called Grass Root Soccer (www.GrassrootSoccer.org) that has a simple and concise vision: “A world mobilized through soccer to create an AIDS free generation.” To date, GRS has graduated over 500,000 youths WORLDWIDE from their HIV prevention programs. Please take a look at their website, which has a plethora of information related to how they plan to reach their next milestone/goal: 1 million educated youth by World Cup 2014.
