And so it begins

Juan Gualberto “Berto” Veliz
What can I say about Berto? He is a man with a constant smile. He’s humble, compassionate, caring, giving, and passionate about his family, work, and God. Berto is a thinker. An artist, creative, and talented. Berto is a man of many ideas.
Berto a very private man. He hasn’t shared his problems or struggles except with a close few people. Those who absolutely needed to know.
His deep faith in God has carried him through these many years as he struggled with this illness.
What more can I say about Berto?
Berto is dying. His body is shutting down on him. This selfless man who allows me to steal his time when I want to talk about things that don’t amount to much or when I ask for his help to work around one of my problems. Yet, he’s the one who really needs the time and help to solve his problem.
He’s running out of time.
You see, Berto has Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). More specifically, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS).
Since June of 2009 when he was diagnosed with FSGS, he has continued his medical care and followed the medical recommendations for sustained and improved function. For a number of years his kidney function stayed around 25%. In 2015, it took a significant dip. He held 12-14% for almost 12 solid months. Frankly, that is impressive. Now, 6 years to the month and at the age of 45, he’s at Stage 5 (End Stage Renal Disease or ESRD) with 6% kidney function.
It’s bad. Really bad.
He needs dialysis, he needs it now! There is no waiting period. He needs a transplant. If he doesn’t get either, he will die.
Still there I have hope!
Berto has been blessed with a living donor. Terms of a transplant have been negotiated. This is where my hope kicks in.
This blessing costs a large sum of money - $200,000. It’s a lot for one man to handle alone. It’s a small difference in our day to day life. When we come together, people like you and like me, we can make a big change in this man’s life and his children’s lives too.
That’s why I created this page, this team – Team Berto – to uplift, encourage, to give back and to provide hope for a man who has given so much, so deeply and so unselfishly. A father with 5 children. A man without any other options because of a broken system – a system that lacks human compassion and basic humanity. A Godly man.
I refuse to believe his only option is to die. I believe he has the right to live! I refuse to believe all hope is lost. I believe that because of you, all hope is found! I do believe in BERTO. I DO believe in YOU. Please give to keep hope alive. You are literally helping save this man's life. Join Team Berto! Together, we are the difference we want to see in this world.
