BENEFITING: Los Medicos Voladores
EVENT DATE: Jul 28, 2012
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page for the Flying Doctors medical trip in the Highlands of Guatemala.
Last summer, I traveled to Lago Atitlan to learn medical Spanish and the Mayan culture. I learned about the story of five hundred years of post-colonial turmoil, and how ongoing social and political oppression continues to impact the Guatemalans today. One of the most marginalizing issues is the lack of access to healthcare.
This summer, July 28 - August 3, 2012, a group of volunteers from Los Medicos Voldares (AKA The Flying Doctors) will be setting up a medical clinic in the Guatemalan Highlands. I will be one of the MDs on the trip.
Los Médicos Voladores (LMV) -- in Spanish, the flying doctors -- is a 100% volunteer-based, non-religious, nonprofit organization that aims to improve the health and well-being of geographically diverse peoples through education and the provision of no-cost, high-quality medical, dental, and optometric clinics. LMV serves Mexico, Central and South America, and migrant labor populations of southeast California. Since 1975 LMV has offered more than 250 short-term medical, dental, optometry, and other healthcare clinics, treating over 7,000 patients per year.
Traditional Mayan lore tells us that 2012 marks a time of unique potential, with the completion of the current 5,126 year cycle and the beginning of a new one. This is an ideal time to support positive growth in one of the few remaining Mayan communities.
